    National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards require building owners and managers to have their rolling and sliding fire doors inspected and tested annually, and to maintain written documentation of such inspections.   3. WHAT WE DO

    Our Elevator Speech

    In a nutshell...our factory trained and certified technicians perform the visual and operational inspection, testing and certification of your facilities fire doors so they meet NFPA 80 requirements. Once we determine your fire door is in compliance, a "Fire Door Certification Tag" is attached to each fire door indicating the date the fire door was inspected, tested and passed.

    A copy of your Fire Door Inspection and Drop Test results are kept in our company's records in case of an emergency or any compliance questions. We will then give you a courtesy call once a year to schedule your Fire Door Inspection and Drop Test service to ensure your fire doors are kept in compliance with NFPA 80 and remain in good working order.

    Fire Door Testing

      Visual Inspection  

    1. Insure Proper Installation

    • Attachment to jambs and proper bolts, washers and expansion anchors are as required.
    • Curtain, barrel and guides are aligned, level and true.
    • Expansion clearance.
    • Fusible link locations.

    2. Check for Damaged, Incorrect or Missing Parts

    • Slats - bent slats, cracked beads, holes and torn ends.
    • End Locks - missing, broken, bent or loose.
    • Bottom Bar - bent angles, loose bolts, correct starter slat.
    • Guide Assembly - bent guides, loose bolts, missing fiber washers and bell mouths.
    • Hood and Flame Baffle - bent, dented, rubbing, curtain, holes, tears, attachment to the wall, intermediate supports.
    • Brackets and Operating Mechanism - worn, misaligned, or badly meshed gears, broken sprockets or bent drive and spring shafts.
    • Automatic Closing and Governor Assemblies - drop or release arms tied, blocked or jammed.
    • Fusible Links - sash chain, S-hooks, eyes not painted, coated with dust or grease, kinked or pinched, twisted and no longer flexible, raceways are clear and free from obstruction.
      *Fusible links are recommended to be replaced annually. The date stamp on the link shall be used to determine the annual replacement.

    3. Ancillary Equipment

    • Smoke detectors / release devices - check batteries annually.
    • Contol Panel - Check all functions.
    • Miscellaneous other equipment should be check for proper operation

    • Operation of the door is normal in the full range of motion, up and down, ease of operation.
    • Spring tension is correct.
    • Free movement of curtain in guides.

    The Drop Test

    *Please Note: If any component of the door and the installation checked above do not pass the inspection, they must be replaced or fixed before conducting the Drop Test!

    • Clear area around and on both sides of the door being tested.
    • Only personnel allowed in the area of the fire door being tested are those conducting the test. Post personnel on both sides of the door so no one enters the area!
    • Drop Test per manufacturer's written instructions.
    • Speed of the curtain during the test must fall at least 6" per second and not more than 24" per second.
      ( ie, a 10 foot tall fire door must fall between 6" per second = 20 seconds & 24" per second = 5 seconds )
    • Full closure of the curtain with the bottom bar resting on the sill or floor within the allowed time frame.
    • Reset fire door per manufacturer's written instructions.
    • Drop test the fire door one more time, same as above, to demonstrate resetting of the fire door was properly conducted.
    • Reset fire door per manufacturer's written instructions. Drop Test is now complete and door should be in proper working condition.

    *Note: Ultimately acceptance of a fire door is the decision of the authority having jurisdiction as defined by NFPA 80. NFPA 80 defines the AHJ as the organization, office or individual responsible for approving equipment, an installation or a procedure.

    Code administration, final code interpretation and final product approval fall under the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Building code officials, Fire Marshals and state or federal government officials may be AHJs.

  4. WHY WE DO IT

    Fire doors help protect property and save lives in the event of an emergency. Faulty, damaged or inoperable fire doors can lead to tragic losses to both property and personnel. We provide your facility's ongoing compliance with NFPA 80 section requirements.

    An annual Fire Door Inspection and Drop Test is required to ensure that your fire doors will close automatically in the case of a fire emergency. National Fire Protection Association standards NFPA 80 require business owners and property managers to have their rolling and sliding fire doors inspected and tested at a minimum once a year. Written documentation of these inspections and tests are to be kept.

    5.2.1 Fire door assemblies shall be inspected and tested not less than annually, and a written record of the inspection shall be signed and kept for inspection by the AHJ.

    5.2.2.1 As an alternate means of compliance with 5.2.1, subject to the AHJ, fire door assemblies shall be permitted to be inspected, tested, and maintained under a written performance based program.

    5.2.2.2 Goals established under a performance-based program shall provide assurance that the fire door assembly will perform its intended function when exposed to fire conditions.

    5.2.2.3 Technical justification for inspection, testing, and maintenance intervals shall be documented.

    5.2.2.4 The performance-based option shall include historical data acceptable to the AHJ.

    5.2.3.1 Functional testing of fire door and window assemblies shall be performed by individuals with knowledge and understanding of the operating components of the type of door being subject to testing.

    5.2.3.2 Before testing, a visual inspection shall be performed to identify any damaged or missing parts that can create a hazard during testing or affect operation or resetting.

    5.2.5.1 Fire door assemblies shall be visually inspected from both sides to assess the overall condition of door assembly.

    5.2.5.2 The following items shall be verified:

    1. No open holes or breaks exist in surfaces of either the door or frame.
    2. Slats, endlocks, bottom bar, guide assembly, curtain entry hood, and flame baffle are correctly installed and intact.
    3. Glazing, vision light frames, and glazing beads are intact and securely fastened in place, if so equipped.
    4. Curtain, barrel, and guides are aligned, level, plumb, and true.
    5. Expansion clearance is maintained in accordance with manufacturer's listing.
    6. Drop release arms and weights are not blocked or wedged.
    7. Mounting and assembly bolts are intact and secured.
    8. Attachments to jambs are with bolts, expansion anchors, or as otherwise required by the listing.
    9. Smoke detectors, if equipped, are installed and operational.
    10. No parts are missing or broken.
    11. Fusible links, if equipped, are in the location; chain/cable, s-hooks, eyes, and so forth, are in good condition (i.e., no kinked or pinched cable, no twisted or inflexible chain); and links are not painted or coated with dust or grease.
    12. Auxiliary hardware items that interfere or prohibit operation are not installed on the door or frame.
    13. No field modifications to the door assembly have been performed that void the label.

    5.2.14.3.3 When the annual test for proper operation and full closure is conducted, rolling steel fire doors shall be drop tested twice.

    5.2.14.3.4 The first test shall be to check for proper operation and full closure.

    5.2.14.3.5 A second test shall be done to verify that the automatic-closing device has been reset correctly.

    5.2.15.2 Any breaks in the face covering of doors shall be repaired immediately.

    5.2.15.3 Where a fire door, frame, or any part of its appurtenances is damaged to the extent that it could impair the door's proper emergency function, the following actions shall be performed:

    1. The fire door, frame, door assembly, or any part of its appurtenances shall be repaired with labeled parts or parts obtained from the original manufacturer.
    2. The door shall be tested to ensure emergency operation and closing upon completion of the repairs.

    5.2.15.3.1 If repairs cannot be made with labeled components or parts obtained from the original manufacturer or retrofitted in accordance with Section 5.3, the fire door frame, fire door assembly, or appurtenances shall be replaced.
